A Malay wedding emcee in Singapore, the pengacara majlis, runs your wedding in Malay and English and keeps the traditional segments in the right order: the kompang and silat procession, the bersanding, the merenjis and tepung tawar, the makan beradab, the cake cutting and the doa selamat. We shortlist emcees who have hosted Malay weddings before, not only general events, and send you profiles and a price.
Price: about SGD 500 to 900 for a void deck wedding with one emcee, SGD 1,000 to 1,600 at a hotel ballroom, and SGD 1,200 to 2,200 for a male and female pair. See emcee rates in Singapore.
What your emcee does on the day
Most of the work happens between announcements. Your emcee tells the kompang troupe when to start, tells the photographer which way the bersanding will face, checks that the couple is ready behind the pelamin, keeps an eye on the makan beradab timing with the caterer, and asks guests to put their phones down before the doa. The welcome, the doa and anything addressed to the elders usually go in Malay first. Directions for guests, such as where to queue for food or when photos happen, usually go in English so nobody is left out.
Void deck, community club or hotel
Void deck or HDB function room. Usually a half day of 3 to 5 hours, often in the morning or early afternoon. Space is tight, there is no stage lighting and the emcee often uses a handheld speaker. The procession happens in the open void deck, so the emcee manages crowd flow as much as atmosphere.
Community club hall. Basic stage and sound, more structure than a void deck and moderate coordination with other vendors.
Hotel ballroom. A full evening of 4 to 6 hours with a stage, a pelamin, an AV screen and sometimes a live band. The emcee coordinates the photographer, the videographer, the AV technician and the banquet manager.
A typical running order
- Guest arrival and registration, 30 to 45 minutes.
- Kompang and silat procession for the groom's side, 15 to 20 minutes.
- Bersanding on the pelamin, 20 to 30 minutes including photos.
- Merenjis and tepung tawar, 15 to 20 minutes.
- Makan beradab, about 10 minutes.
- Doa selamat, 5 to 10 minutes, in full silence.
- Cake cutting and toast, about 15 minutes.
- Bouquet toss or games if you want them, 15 to 20 minutes.
- Dinner and mingling.
If the akad nikah is at the same venue, add 30 to 45 minutes at the start and a break before the bersanding for the outfit change.
Brief your emcee a week ahead
Send the couple's full names and how they want to be introduced, who is arranging the kompang or silat troupe, the names and titles of elders who need a mention, who leads the doa, any segment you want shortened or kept private, and contact numbers for the photographer, videographer and caterer. A five minute call saves mispronounced names in front of two hundred guests. Ask each emcee how many Malay weddings they have hosted. The run sheet and script guide has a checklist.
